News / Mom, daughter’s rape a hoax

What was an alleged house robbery, in which a woman and her four year-old daughter were supposedly raped, as reported in the Herald last week, turns out to be a bunch of lies.

The woman, Ms Palesa Mofokeng (24) from Driefontein alleged that on 24 January at approximately 04:30, three men had entered the home where her and her daughter were asleep, that two of the men raped her and the other suspect raped her daughter.

She went as far as saying that she had heard her little girl’s screams as she was being raped.  “Due to this statement,” said Detective Sgt Dennis Zuma of the Carletonville SAPS’s Detectives Branch, “I had the toddler examined medically.”

It is apparent that Mofokeng is in the process of getting divorced, and that her husband has already moved out of the home they shared (where she allegedly got raped and robbed, and where a house-breaking had taken place just a day prior to the robbery).

Zuma then received information from Mofokeng’s boyfriend, Mr Sipho Mkhwanazi (29) that proved the entire case and information received from Mofokeng false.

Mkhwanazi alleges that Mofokeng, her brother, Mr Tshepo Emmanuel (19) and himself were at her house in Driefontein on both 23 and 24 January (the nights she alleged her house was broken into and she was robbed and her and her daughter raped).

All the goods that Mofokeng alleged had been stolen in the housebreaking and robbery, were recovered at her boyfriend and brother’s house.  “All these goods belonged to her husband,” Zuma tells.  “Her own possessions had not been touched.”

Zuma says that Mkhwanazi alleged that Mofokeng told him she was doing this for insurance purposes.  “But when I interviewed her, she said that she did it all to get her husband’s attention,” he explains.

The three were arrested and appeared in the Oberholzer Magistrates Court on Tuesday, 7 February, but are still in police custody as the case was postponed to a later date.

Mofokeng appeared on charges of perjury, defeating the ends of justice and theft, whilst Mkhwanazi and Emmanuel both appeared for theft.
